Lower SchoolAt St. Mark's Educational Society the Lower School is characterized by its stimulating, caring and relaxed ethos. Each classroom is a community of learners in which students learn to respect each other as they participate in many collaborative experiences. From designing and building structures in an early childhood classroom, to giving a fellow student feedback on a Audio Visual assignment, Lower School children are challenged to work together and to learn from each other. Our curriculum is an eclectic mix of best practices from the best leading educational systems.we are constantly updating new methods for refining lessons and units of curriculum. The Lower School has a clearly defined program of ongoing assessment, which is designed to ensure that we meet the individual needs of every child so that each one meets his or her full potential. Learning specialists, a reading/literacy specialist, speech/language therapists, a counselor, and an educational psychologist serve as resources and provide direct services to students. All Lower School children keep portfolios of their work in which they reflect on their goals, progress, and challenges. Student-led portfolio conferences are a highlight of the year. Beyond the classroom, a talented group of specialist teachers provides lessons in extra curricular activities, computer, art, physical education, and science. The Lower School Library is one of the finest to be found in any school. |

College CounselingEvery interaction between a student and college counselor takes place with the present and future well-being of the student in mind. Although the college selection and application process does not begin formally until the Admissions open for the year, much is done prior to this time to lay the foundation for appropriate college admissions in the future. Numerous visits by college in-charges, parent/student information meetings and many individually scheduled counselor conferences ensure that, in their final year, 2nd year students are kept very busy during the college counseling process. Although counselors are normally the primary source of information on appropriate colleges, numerous other resources, including college review books, individual college catalogues, college videos and college search computer software, are readily available at the School. |
